Study smart by understanding YOU!

[Part 7]

To study smart, you will have to realise a few things about you. What make you unique from everyone else when it comes to studying?

This is important.

Everyone likes to learn differently. You will have much more success to study smart absorbing the information for your certification when you apply the right ways for you, on how you like to learn.

First let's see what are learning styles so you can find the one that represents you....

  1. Visual learner – uses your eyes to learn.

  2. Auditory learner – uses your ears.

  3. Sequential learner – needs things to be in order.

  4. Global learner – uses images to understand.

  5. Kinesthetic learner – physically needs to do things.

You may look at this list and think, "hey I learn using all of them". This may be true, but we all have a dominant way of learning and secondary learning styles.

For instance, my dominant learning style is Visual learner. My secondary ones are: Sequential and Global. The rest I may use, but they aren't my prefered ways of studying.

The way to realize how you like learning, in order to study smart, is to take various examples from your life. Not only from studying for certifications. Think of things you have learnt and find the common thread in them.

So how can you apply your learning style to better study for your certifications? Easy. Understand that when it comes to certification there are many ways for you to learn.

  1. Visual learner (use CBT training)

  2. Auditory learner (use tutorials in mp3 format)

  3. Sequential learner (a book has things in order)

  4. Global learner (books, internet, CBT training)

  5. Kinesthetic learner (need to build your home lab)

So if your dominant learning style is Kinesthetic, you will need to physically do things. You will need to build a home lab and play around with the technologies you are learning.

But...

With certification, one study method is rarely enough. For instance, if you buy a CBT to train for your cert, you will also need a book as books give you all the information.

If you use a book you will also need to supplement your study with another method.

That's why we need to see what our dominant learning style is (and buy the appropriate product) and then supplement that with 1-2 more products (which have to do with our secondary learning styles).
