Power study notes cut study by 90%
[Part 2]
|
One of the most powerful ways of studying is by taking notes. You know what they are. Who doesn't. And most people take notes the wrong way. Think they are a waste of time? Think again. Think that it will take you toooo long to write your own notes? Think again.
By taking your own notes, you will learn better, learn quicker, and cut your study by half.
You are going to do this by understanding first what notes are - what notes are not - how to correctly write them - and, and, and MOST important how NOT to write them.
|
Because here is where the problem lays. People take bad study notes which don’t give them all the benefits. Do them wrong and you waste time and energy. Do them right and you cut your study time in half and also learn much faster.
First:
This is what study notes are:
Notes are the gist of what you read in that big, fat certification book (most are over 800 pages). You take a notepad and write the important things you are reading (or do it on you computer).
Here is the trouble with that.
- You tend to overwrite
- At times you copy the book and do not write things in your own words
- Getting 1/4 into the book you realize your note page numbers equals the book's page number count.
These are not power notes - they are a waste of time!!!.
NOW - THESE are Power Study Notes...
- Contain only the most important information
- Contain only the bare necessities
- Only what you don't know
- What you are having trouble with (especially that)
- Contain what you don't understand
- Written in your own words (aaaaaaalways)
Power notes should NOT contain...
- What you already know
- What you can guess
- What sounds logical and you can figure out in the exam
- Long worded sentences
- Long worded paragraphs
- Nothing you can't write in your own words
These simple, effective techniques will help you summarize that big, fat book by 90% So... what you will eventually end up with is having to study for 100 pages of your notes rather than an 800 page book filled with fluff, things you already know, things that you skip etc.
Easier? You bet.
But we understand better with examples, so lets go to the next section and I'll show you how to create power study notes in practice.
