Should I get an information technology degree or certifications first?

--- Asked by reader

I'm afraid that this is going to be one of those answers that doesn't really give you an answer but rather will show you both arguments and give you food for thought. There is no standard answer I can give you for this question.

Whether an information technology degree or certifications, each have their own place in the IT industry.

Some people will argue that Bill Gates, Jobs and other IT giants didn't finish university and did quite well for themselves. Yes, but these people created their own jobs. Can you create your own job? If so, then this doesn't really apply to you.

So here we go.

Information technology degree

* Proof that you finish what you start

* It's difficult for degrees to focus on niche concepts like certifications do

* Some positions require them, other don't

* You become more marketable with a degree and certifications

VS

Certifications

* You can get pay rises for each certification you do

* Shows your ability in specialized areas of technology

* skills can be updated, new skills can be got at because of the shorter time you can get them

* Being in the IT industry is not a a stand still career, for job security and growth you need certifications to keep up with the changes

So, which is better?

Both.

Should you do both?

Now this is the area where things become gray. Ultimately what employers seek is your ability to do the job well and cost effective. Whether you have a degree or not, will depend on the job.

If you had to pick one or the other right now, what should you pick?

I would definitely go with certifications first. They are your ticket into the IT job market. Experience is paramount and there is no point delaying getting that experience first.
