History of computers

If we trace back the history of computers to see who was the first person to invent it, it can become a little tricky.

The computer is a clay that many people had their hands in, to mold and reach it to the perfection of their time and are continuing to do so. After all, its the best invention (along with the internet, fast cars and star trek).

But just for fun, I've dug up a few things about the history of computers which were interesting:

history of computers

The UNIVAC (UNIVersal Automatic Computer I) was the first commercial computer produced in the United States for military purposes . J Presper Eckert and John Mauchly were the designers. They developed it for the U.S. Army's Ballistic Research Laboratory who needed a better way for gunners to quickly look up which settings to use with a particular weapon, and under particular conditions. The history of computers when it comes to mainframes is very interesting and I've written an article about it here.

history of computers

Konrad Zuse was a big player in the development of the computer. He was a German civil engineer who's greatest achievement was the world's first functional program controlled computer, the Z3, made in 1941.

Zuse also designed the first high-level programming language, Plankalkül, first published in 1948, although this was a theoretical contribution, since the language was not implemented in his lifetime and did not directly influence early languages.

history of computers

John Vincent Atanasoff was an Americal physicist who invented the first automatic electronic digital computer, called the Atanasoff Berry computer.

Of course there were many more people who shaped the computers we enjoy today. Since the 80's the standard desktop computers have not changed much in their oversall size but portable computers have shrunk in size dramatically from were they started off.
