Comptia A Plus Certification: Do I really need it if I already know the stuff?

	The Comptia A Plus certification is for those wishing to become or are computer technicians. Many of us are computer geeks way before we start getting certs. Through fixing, building, poking around the machines we have come to know computers very well. It is right then to say that we should start off with this cert of should we advance onto higher ones?

Certifications validate your experiences/knowledge

Truth is, we get certified to show employers we know our stuff. Why then do we pay for exams? We would just buy books, learn and that would be the end of it. The truth is, employers need to see some formal paper that states indeed we know what we claim we do. They won't just take our word for it, will they?

Don't underestimate this entry cert

Although an entry cert, the comptia a plus certification has much to teach you. It covers many areas and just because we have been working on something doesn't necessarily mean we now everything there is to know. In our everyday lives we tend to concentrate on some of the things and neglect others - only because we don't need to constantly use them. Other areas we don't touch at all. You may learn something new.

If you believe you already know the material, do this...

If you believe you can pass the exam without having the need to study, then just pass the exam. Don't pay for study materials. If nothing else, the comptia a plus certification will look good on your resume.

It counts as an elective

If you are going for your MCSA certification, the a+ and network+ certs count as an elective.

Do you have more than 9 months experience?

To be able to sit for the network plus exam you need either to already have the a+ cert or to have 9 months of experience in network support or administration or adequate academic training.

but...

Don't go cert crazy

This is a trap that new people in I.T fall in. A cert means a lot to us. It's the trophy at the end of a long and exhaustive, yet worthwhile, road. We want to feel that often so we tend at time to go cert crazy, trying to get as many as we can. Only get certified in what will advance your career, and in the appropriate stage of your career.
