Upgrade your Certification MCSA 2003 certification to a Windows Server 2008 Certification Now?

Your certification MCSA 2003 will never expire. You can still list it on your resume for years to come.

The server 2003 technology will not become obselete anytime soon, so why should you even consider upgrading now?

According to Microsoft "If you have a Windows Server 2008 certification on your resumé, you have an excellent opportunity to catch the eye of early adopter organizations."

That's how Microsoft sees things. How we see things as IT professionals is "When technology moves, we have to move with it. This will depend on our own individual situation: What is our present job requiring of us now? What do we want to achieve as individuals?, What opportunities exist in our current location?"

So this is something we have to think about.

What you will need to upgrade:

Your next step, having already your MCSA 2003 certification, is to pass one exam. This exam is 70-648 (Exam 70-648 is a combination of the two stand-alone exams: 70-640 and 70-642).

Pass this exam and you earn two MCTS certifications on Windows Server 2008 which are:

  1. MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Active Directory, Configuration and
  2. MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Network Infrastructure Configuration

From there you can move onto the MCITP series:

If you want to become a MCITP Server Administrator, you will need one additional exam, the Exam 70-646 PRO: Windows Server 2008, Server Administrator

If you want to become a MCITP Enterprise Administrator, you will need to pass three exams:

  1. Prerequisite exams Exam 70-643 TS: Windows Server 2008 Applications Infrastructure, Configuring

  2. Exam 70-620: TS: Microsoft Windows Vista, Configuring
    Or
Exam 70-624: TS: Deploying and Maintaining Windows Vista Client and 2007 Microsoft Office System Desktops
  3. Exam 70-647: PRO: Windows Server 2008, Enterprise Administrator

note 1: If you are a MCSA on Windows 2000 Server, you cannot upgrade
note 2: There is no upgrade path from messaging or security specializations to Windows Server 2008 certifications.
