The CEH Certification - 4 Facts

What will the CEH certification (Certified Ethical Hacker) do for you?

It will scare people for one. It will awe others and it will help you get women or men (probably won't but I thought I would throw that in anyway. Anything to motivate you).

There were many books on hacking before the Ecouncil (International Council of E-Commerce Consultants) organization decided to define the hacking legalities thus creating a certification - or in other words, the Ecouncil found a great way of making money.

How can them making money off you, actually help you?

Well, the CEH certification is in high demand and valued by organizations that must secure their IT infrastructure and networks. So there you go.

This vendor neutral certification covers common exploits, vulnerabilities and countermeasures.

1. What does an Ethical hacker do?

No. An ethical hacker does NOT hack into NASA. The definition of an Ethical Hacker is very similar to a Penetration Tester. The Ethical Hacker is an individual who is usually employed with the organization and who can be trusted to undertake an attempt to penetrate networks and/or computer systems using the same methods as a Hacker.

Illegal hacking (i.e.; cracking computer systems, putting spywear on your girlfriend's computer etc) is a felony in the United States and other countries aren't enthusiastic about illegal hacking either. But when this type of hacking is done by request (ie, when you are given permission to hack and make money from it) and under a contract between an Ethical Hacker and an organization, it is legal. The most important point is that an Ethical Hacker has authorization to probe the target.

A Certified Ethical Hacker is a skilled professional who understands and knows how to look for the weaknesses and vulnerabilities in target systems and uses the same knowledge and tools as a malicious hacker. In other words, think like a criminal to catch a criminal.

Do you have at least two years of information security related experience? If you do, you can opt for self study. You can do this either through a book(s), CBT or other methods.

OR

The Ecouncil needs proof that you have the experience to be able to sit for the exam. If you can’t provide that proof then self study isn’t an option for you. You can choose to go the boot camp way or a training school which has the EC-Council approval.
