APlus certification, Network+ or MCDST...

Which to do first?

The APlus certification is the one most of us start off with.

By studying for the exam you will learn how to build, fix and troubleshoot computers. It gives you a broad foundation in the basics and in a small extent goes into networks.

Then we can either follow it by either the network+ which goes into the fundamentals of networking or the MCDST which concentrates on troubleshooting the Windows XP Operating System.

There is no correct order and it depends on the current role you are in. If you in a help desk role, it makes more sense to concentrate on the MCDST first as most users will be ringing you up for operating system issues. If you haven't got that all important first IT job and are looking for a help desk position, it really doesn't matter which order you do the certs.

From a newbie's point of view, none of the certs can be classified as 'easy'. Consider through that for the network+ exam there is only one exam you need to pass where the MCDST contains two exams you need to pass.
